What Are Custom License Plates in Newfoundland and Labrador?

In Newfoundland and Labrador, custom license plates, often referred to as "vanity" or "personalized" plates, are not officially available through the government's Motor Registration Division as of the information available. This means that residents of Newfoundland and Labrador cannot order license plates with personalized text through official channels, which is different from many other regions where personalized plates can feature custom numbers or letters to represent personal expressions, names, businesses, or interests.

However, novelty replica plates are available from various online retailers. These plates mimic the official Newfoundland and Labrador license plate design and can be personalized with custom text. These are intended for decorative purposes only and are not recognized as official vehicle registration plates. They cannot be used in place of official government-issued license plates.

Are Custom License Plates Legal in Newfoundland and Labrador?

Newfoundland and Labrador does not offer a wide range of personalized license plates for official registration and use on public roads. Plates typically follow the vehicle and are not personalized in the way that is common in many other jurisdictions.

What Types of Custom License Plates Are Available in Newfoundland and Labrador?

Newfoundland and Labrador offer specialized custom license plate programs for certain groups, including firefighters and veterans. These programs recognize these individuals' contributions to the community and the nation.

  • Firefighter License Plates

The Fire Fighter license plate program is offered through a collaboration between the Motor Registration Division and Fire and Emergency Services. Applicants must be actively serving in a municipal or local service district fire department within the province to be eligible. They should have a minimum of three years of continuous service. The plates, which are issued free of initial fees, can be used on passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles weighing less than 4500 kg.

  • Veteran License Plates

Similarly, the Veteran license plate program is managed in conjunction with the Provincial Command of the Royal Canadian Legion to honour the service of military veterans. Eligibility extends to those who have served honourably in the Canadian Armed Forces, Commonwealth or its wartime allies, the Merchant Navy, Ferry Command during wartime, or as a regular member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, among other qualifications. Like the firefighter plates, there is no initial fee for veteran plates, and they can also be used on passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles.

Both programs require the vehicle owner to retain their original license plate and switch to the custom plate as allowed. The custom plates must be displayed on the rear of the vehicle and can be reassigned to a new vehicle if the owner changes cars.
